Ciao, Thirdies! Are we feeling hungry?
Today’s newsletter is just some food highlights from the past two weeks. I (obviously) should’ve sent this out yesterday but I was out and about!
Quelle surprise.
You know that first day back home from being away? There’s just like a bunch of random shit that needs taken care of. On top of that, it was a gorgeous day so I had to get a run in. Then out for dinner and line dancing, of which I did not actively participate. (Sorry to disappoint, Thirdies.) Although, I did play a lot of pool. The night ended with a drag queen asking my name and saying that it reminded her of her dead dog. So, there’s that.
I guess I should also briefly update you all on how my trip with Amtrak went. It was surprisingly smooth? I mean, my train home was an hour delayed but it could’ve been worse. The bar is very, very low. The La-Z-Boy-recliner-style chairs were very clutch, and the amount of space shocked me. I have truly seen parts of Pennsylvania I never thought I’d see - let alone twice. The fact that there’s no cell reception for about three hours in the mountains is both deeply unsettling and incredibly freeing.
Anyway, back to the food and this late-ass newsletter. Soz!
xoxo,
Edwina
I had never heard of a Monte Cristo sandwich until it was the special at a Banjo Night I attended recently. Being that it was cheap, I said why not! Striped Spatula describes the sandwich as such:
At its core, the Monte Cristo is made as a double or triple decker with ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese. The assembled sandwich is then dipped into an egg batter or custard and pan fried or deep fried until golden.
And Banjo Night at the Elks Lodge basically did just that.
Did this sandwich have ham? Yes. Swiss cheese? Yes. Bread dipped in egg batter and pan fried? Not really. It just had literal French Toast. Was it good? Fuuuuuck yes.
My parents are low-key obsessed with Smoke in Lawrenceville. With good reasons, though. Their tacos are very good. But the real star of the show is their queso dip with homemade flour tortillas. I am incapable of describing how good this queso is so I’m just going to leave you with this photo.
I didn’t get to have any pączki on Fat Tuesday. So when my friend Alyson and I were grocery shopping on Sunday and spotted some, we had to grab a box. Even if they were…like 5 days old? Despite the time sitting on the shelf, and the fact that they were from a grocery store bakery, these pączki did the damn thing. I don’t know what it is about Polish doughnuts that make them so good.
70ºF weather in winter. (climate change :/ )
That second Mina song is on the credits for “Luca”! I love it so much!
